Jan Moir – ‘orchestrated’? Ha.

By this time of the day, it hardly seems worth writing anything on the offensive Jan Moir article appearing in the Daily Mail today re: Stephen Gateley's death. Interesting though to see the day's internet response making a large part of the evening news, regarding how Twitter (and I'm sure other networks) were quick to lay into her, and rightly so.

What did make me laugh though, was her reply to the criticism. As I heard on the evening news that she had responsed, I assumed it would be with an apology, but no – incredibly, she stands her ground. The bit that really made me laugh though was this:

'In what is clearly a heavily orchestrated internet campaign I think it is mischievous in the extreme to suggest that my article has homophobic and bigoted undertones.'

And just for Jan, I took that quote from her response reprinted in gay news site The Pink News – for a homophobe, that must be pretty galling. Oops sorry I forgot, you're not homophobic.

To start with, they weren't overtones, it was laid on pretty thick. Jan, you were being homophobic.

But what I really like is the idea that this couldn't possibly have been a mass and human reaction to the article, but must have been 'orchestrated'. By who? I found out about it via a Twitter retweet, and god knows where that came from. She clearly doesn't have much of a grip on how the internet works – it isn't run by shadowy anarchist gay militants. It isn't really run by anyone in that respect. It's just people, and that's what people are thinking. And even if it was orchestrated, if someone is going to all that trouble to criticise you and others are following that 'campaign', doesn't that tell you something?

In the meantime, it looks like the Press Complaints Commission website is being affected by heavy traffic, taking ages to load…
