Who will play the Pavement ATP?

So, not only are Pavement reforming, they’re curating ATP too!

I got to All Tomorrows Parties pretty regularly, and thought, before the rumours start, let’s try and make some calculated guesses about who might play the Pavement ATP. To be honest I have no idea what their musical tastes are, but I’d say there are a few factors:

  1. They may have ‘produced’ or mentored a few good acts along the years since the band broke up
  2. A lot of them are or were involved in various side projects
  3. They might have enough clout for some bigger bands to come and play ATP for a reduced fee.
  4. They may try and surprise people with some unexpected acts.
  5. Even when a band curates, ATP often seem to have some kind of input to choices…

So, let’s speculate and then we can compare to who’s rumoured:

  • Silver Jews
  • Steve Malkmus and the Jicks
  • Sunn o)))
  • Public Enemy
  • Marnie Stern
  • Built to Spill
  • Guided By Voices
  • The Fall
  • Sonic Youth (or members of)
  • Mudhoney
  • Les Savy Fav
  • Archers of Loaf
  • Polvo
  • Fly Ashtray
  • God is my Co-Pilot
  • Bonnie Prince Billy
  • PJ Harvey

…and beyond that, who knows. Anyway join me in a few months and we’ll see where we are with those band guesses.

Also worth looking at past Malkmus-curated events for hints. In 2003, he put together a 2-day shindig at the South Bank centre, for which the line-up was:Graham Coxon / Bert Jansch / Mark Perry & Alternative TV / The Ground Hogs / Vashti Bunyan / Wizz Jones / Super Furry Animals / Billy ChildishAnd in 2004 he curated 1 day of ATP at Camber Sands:Modest Mouse / The Shins / Mission of Burma / Fiery Furnaces / Miighty Flashlight / White Magic / ESG / Enon / James Yorkston / Nina Nastasia / Cass McCombs / Deerhoof / Trad Gras och Stenar / Justin Spear DJ (Stereolab) / Belle and Sebastian DJsBased on those, I’d expect some more punk/post-punk, perhaps some UK folk-rock types, 70s psyche and probably a bit of more recent-ish indie. So here are some of my predictions:WireGang of FourRichard ThompsonBert JanschDecemberistsThe NationalBevis FrondSome NZ/Flying Nun stuff (The Bats, The Clean, etc)Jason Lyttle (Grandaddy)Bottomless Pit (ex-members of Silkworm)ShellacMarble Valley (Steve West’s band)Boston Spaceships (Robert Pollard’s new band)Wilco (members worked with Preston School of Industry)Boredoms / OOIOO (Yoshimi worked with Ibold in Free Kitten)

Hmm we’ll see, and I’ll tick them off as they happen…

I’ve got a ticket and would love it if both your predictions come true. Bert Jansch, Pavement, The Shins and Wilco on the same bill would make it an official all time classic. Meanwhile, here’s an article on a blog I edit that adds a few more names into the hat, including classic 80s punk band The Descendents.http://www.neonfiller.com/page6.htm#51828

See updates above, new bands announced – me and Andrew aren’t doing very well with our guesses.
