Battles at Birmingham Barfly

Last night I went to see the hot new kids on the music scene, Battles (even though they have been around for a while now. I was supposed to see them at ATP last weekend but as their single and album is out right now and very popular, the queues were so long we couldn’t get into the room they were playing. So it was very nice to find they were doing a Birmingham gig 3 days later.

Musically, they’re pretty hard to describe, a kind of math/post-rock (path-rock? most-rock?). Four blokes making a lot of syncopated noise with guitars, keyboards, looping equipment, filters and some rock solid, very tight drumming. The overall effect is much more than the sum of the parts. You can hear every track on the new album on the Battles myspace page.

As they are officially Claire’s post-rock choice of the moment she came along, and also Angela, Lizey and Roy (in fact I worked out the other day that Claire had previously seen 5 of the bands that were playing at ATP this year, very impressive).
